Abstract
Wheel sped sensors are fitted to the driven wheels of the train, esp. for electric or diesel electric traction where each wheel is fitted with a separate electric motor. The wheel speed signals are differentiated and their acceleration signals are compared by a central control to detect any wheel spin. The respective motor currents are then modulated to eliminate wheel spin. Because of the different wheel diameters through braking and wear a correction has to be applied for each wheel and this is automatically computed by the central control every time the train freewheels, i.e. travels without braking or traction. The stored reference signals are processed in one channel of the two channel control so that accurate spin signals can determined.
