Abstract

The contactless displacement sensor can measure a distance (D) of up to a few centimetres without mechanical contact. It has a tungsten electrode (1) in an isolating refractory tube (2). The tube (2) contains a gas, such as nitrogen or argon, which is ejected onto the surface (6) whose distance is to be measured. The electrode (1) is connected through a resistor (3) of a few tens of megohms to a high voltage generator (4). An ammeter (5) measures the electric current flowing in the circuit in which the last element is the conductive surface (6). An electric discharge by corona effect is created between the electrode (1) and the conductive surface (6) such that the current in the ammeter is a measure of the distance (D) to the surface (6).
