Abstract

Water is temporarily stored to meet peak demand by pumping it into a container which can be connected to the supply mains and which consists on all sides of walls of flexible plastics, welded or adhered together, preferably until all air is excluded. Preferably, the container is fitted in a trough in the ground, with its underside and sidewalls fitting the trough, or may be stored in the sea or a river, below the surface and with additional ballast, to be brought to the surface by pumping compressed air into additional float bladders. The container has an outer protective layer of e.g. plastics foam, which may also give heat protection, with a flexible cover foil, e.g. of soft PVC; PVC foam may be used.
