Title cpds. of formula (I):- are prepd. by hydrolysing, at 80 degrees C-reflux temp. for 2-20 hrs. in 2-6 moles 0.5-5 (pref. 1.5-2.5) N alkali metal hydroxide soln., a cpd. of formula (II), (where R = 1-3C alkyl). (II) are novel cpds., themselves prepd. by the Hoffmann reaction of a cpd. of formula (II; where -NHCO2R is -CONH2). (I) are inters. for pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals, flavour improvers and hardening accelerators. High reaction concns. facilitates isolation of (I) which is obtd. in high yield and in high purity.
