Abstract
Power stations have rapid acting reversing valves for regulating feed water passing through preheaters. These give rise to pressure waves which travel up the feed pipe and can cause much damage. The patent covers a system in which the three way cock is first reversed. At the same time a stopping element closes relatively slowly. This is followed by the closing of a throttling mechanism in an exhaust circuit which short circuits the closure of the three way cock, i.e. into the pipe under pressure. This lessens considerably the risk of hammer blow.
