Abstract

A thin sheet of liq. to be decontaminated flows along a bed of a channel, beneath a series of ultra-violet lamp tubes, the bed and a channel cover above the lamp tubes both being lined with a reflective sheet material, e.g. strainless steel. For highly contaimated liquid, the flowing sheet may be only 2 mm thick while for a liquid requiring much less intensive radiation treatment the sheet depth may reach 50 mm. Method is useful for the purification of drinking water, milk, wine, oysters and other shell fish, etc. Partic the treatment of domestic water supplies. The treatment is cheaper than chlorination while being equally effective and without the disadvantages of chlorine, esp. flavour damagE.
