Abstract

Polymers of low and medium mol. wt. and having terminal reactive gps., esp. OH, are prepd. from one or more monomers in an orG. solvent using a peroxide/alcohol, more specifically an H2O2/alcohol, free radical initiator system. The alcohol is pref. liquid, contains 1-15C and may be prim. second, or tert and is pref. used with a non solvent, pref. benzene or heptane. One of the monomers is ethylenic, pref. dienic. Polymers obtd. by the process are also claimeD. The process gives a liquid mixt. of oligomers (mol. wt. 100-1000) and polymers (ol. wt. 1000-200000) with a predominating amt. (>80%) of the former, the relative amts. being controlled by adjusting the concn. of monomers, peroxide and alcohol, and opt. pressure and temp. With polyalkadienes the polymers are mainly of the 1, 4 structure. Claimed uses cover elastomers, foams, cosmetic prods., fuel additives, plasticisers, softening agents, (semi)fillers and glossy prods.
