Abstract

Flame resistant aromatic fibres and films made by wet or dry spinning or extrusion of solutions of the polymer, are made from copolyesteramides contg. units -NH-Ar1-NH-, -CO-Ar2-CO-, -OC-Ar3-Ya-(Ar4)b-Yc-Ar5-cO- and opt. where Ar1-7 = divalent aromatic radicals, X is -CO-; Y = -(CH2)p-O-CO- or -CO-O-(CH2)p-, p >1, a, b and c = 0 or 1, >=1 of a and c = 1 and M = alkali metal. The polymers are made by reacting stoichiometric amounts of >=1 aromatic diisocyanate with aromatic diacids, >=1 of which contains one or two ester groups, opt. in the presence of a polycondensation accelerator (I) (X is HO- COO-) in an anhydrous polar aprotic solvent at =200 degrees C to give solutions of the desired copolyesteramides. The solutions can be used for wet or dry spinning or extrusion into fibres and films with high thermal stability and flame resistance.
