Abstract

The material is particularly for the construction of engine silencers, and comprises a layer of glass fibre (1) enclosed between metal sheets (2, 3). The assembly is secured together either by spot welding, or by local distortion, the distorted section being then cut out to form lugs which are then bent over, typically by stamping. A silencer can be constructed from two shells, secured together by stamping the lugs, of the composite material. The latter has, apart from its sound insulating qualities, good thermal and mechanical strength. The material is formed by pass the layers from different rolls through pressure rollers.
