Abstract

The barrier consists of a support comprising a vertical leg (2) and two inclined legs (3 & 4). On the vertical leg are two hinged brackets which support a curved shield (1). This shield is held away from the tree by a spring (6) which is attached to the vertical post. The shield is made from a five millimetre thick metal as are the three stiffenings webs. The safety barrier is sufficiently smooth and so positioned that vehicles hitting it are thrown back on the highway. When the shield is in contact with the tree it forms an angle of 30 degrees to the road.
