Abstract
Device uses >=1 inductor comprising a cylinder of non-magnetic matl. rotating on the bar or slab being cast, thus forming a roll. Inside the cylinder is a wound core which is connected to a power supply and thus provides the magnetic field. A large flow of coolant passes through the roll and is in direct contact with the induction coils; the roll being provided with a coolant inlet at one end and an outlet at the other, coolant passing between the bore of the roll and the grooved periphery of the core. Other grooves are provided in the core for assisting coolant flow and also the winding of the coils comprised of flexible wire inside an insulating sheath which is impermeable to the coolant. Due to the very efficient cooling, high currents (e.g. 50A) can be used without damage thus improving the stirring effect.
