Abstract

Trolleys and tables inside a hot cell, remotely controllable from outside the contaminated area, propel a spent fuel element in front of a high powered laser. The laser beam e.g. from a 250 W CO2 gas laser is reflected into two equal components, one of which is reflected around to the opposite side of the fuel element. The laser beams are controlled to cut off end caps and to slice the can into two or more pieces. Cutting drives are not contaminated by radioactive material. Hoppers collect pieces and dust which fall from cutting operation.
