Magnetic properties of a mild steel (0.01% C) are improved by coating the sheet with an aq. paste contg. Si or Al as pure metal or cpd., an inert refractory material, an activating material and a binder, drying then annealing in a reducing atmos. at 1050 degrees C for sufficient time to diffuse Si or Al into the sheet.
