Abstract
Norbornene is selectively (co)polymerised at the double bond using a catalyst system comprising (i) a Ti cpd. TiX4-n(OR)n or TiX3 where X = halogen, R =(cyclo) alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or arylalkyl and n = 0-4 and (ii) organoaluminium cpds. AlR'3-mX'm where X' = halogen or ligand (OR), R' = H (cyclo)alkyl or arylalkyl and m = 1 or 2. Product is a polymer with low double bond content with improved resistance to heat and oxidation. In an example 2.5 moles norbornene were polymerised for 60 mins. at 50 degrees C with 50 mmol TiCl4 and 100 mmol Al(Et)2Cl in n-heptane to a total volume of 1 l, to yield 190 g polynorbornene with a melting range of 280-290 degrees C.
