Abstract

At least the temporary conversion of a matl. into a condition where it absorbs optical energy is effected by exposing it to a laser switching pulse (sw) with there three characteristics: (a) the build-up time tsw is 1 mu s; (b) the intensity Isw is >107 W/cm2; and (c) the pulse-time Tsw is shorter 10 mu s. After the laser switching pulse and during the time ABSORPTION where the matl. absorbs optical energy, a laser pulse or pulse-train is pref. applied for working the matl; the energy of the switching pulse (w) should be small enough to avoid any removal of the matl. being worked. Optimum focussing and establishment of parameters dependent on wavelength is attained so that e.g. a CO2 laser can be used for the economic drilling of holes in otherwise highly reflecting matl. The method is applicable to drilling, melting, and hardening.
