Abstract

An envelope marking system suitable for electronic mail sorting, has the reverse side of the envelope, including the flap, marked with a grid of lines forming a set of squares, each of which corresponds to a different number, where each number represents an address, and a magnetic disc is attached to the relevant square. The disc (6) can be made from magnetic powder and can be self adhesive and will be detected by the sorting apparatus which may be of a magnetically or photo-cell operated type. In alternative designs, the grid may not cover the whole of the envelope, but cover a selected area. Foreign countries may be designated by certain squares of the grid.
