Abstract

Shadow-mask colour television tubes have the disadvantage that they can absorb 85% of the beam current. Single gun penetration tubes have screens made of layers of electroluminescent materials separated by barrier layers and depend upon electron beam penetration to various depths in those layers to vary the display colours. This requires slow scanning in order to overcome the problems of varying the acceleration voltage. This tube overcomes these disadvantages and uses a multi-gun array with convergent electron beams. The variation between the gun potential, the screen potential and the beam current varies the penetration depth, hence the colour. An optical window can also be introduced into the rear of the tube to permit optical projection onto the screen.
