Abstract

The trench excavator is designed to dig trapezoidal shaped trenches. It is joined to a tracked towing vehicle (1) by means of connecting rods (3 & 5) and hydraulic jacks (4 & 7). The power is provided from the towing vehicle through a propellor shaft and universal joints (17). The excavating wheel is inclined at an angle to the horizontal and contains a number of cutting teeth around its periphery. The wheel cuts an inclined trench of approximately rectangular cross section. It is closely followed by the plough share (9) which cuts the final trapezoidal shape of the trench and casts the soil to one side.
