Abstract
Dense, spherical TiCl3.nMClm type catalyst of air particle size 10-200 mu (where n is 0.15-0.50 or 0.3-1.0) is prepd. by reducing TiCl4 with one of R2Mg, RMgX, NaR and RxMXn-x (where R is 1-5C alkyl; X is Cl, Br, I; M is Al or a gp. 1 to 3A or 2B metal, m is the valency of M and x is=m) in the presence of finely divided, preformed catalyst seeds of similar compsn. to, but of much smaller size than, the reqd. prod., and in a solvent which dissolves both the TiCl4 and the reducing agent but not the catalyst seeds. The process is effected by heating the mixt. at the rate of 0.2-2 degrees C/min., with stirring, up to 25 degrees C, starting from pref. -40 to +15 degrees C and pref. repeating the process at least twice, after which the prod. is pref. activated by heating at 90-185 degrees C for 20 min to 5 hrs. The process makes use of very fine particles obtd. as rejects after sieving a similar Ziegler particulate catalyst to obtain larger granules; these five particles are used as seeds to produce larger particles which are particularly useful for producing polyolefin powder by polymsn., esp. polypropylene.
