Abstract

Light-weight filler for concrete consists of calcined spherical clay particles having a highly porous core and a dense surface layer. These particles are produced by mixing raw clay with an organic additive (pref. =90% foamed polystyrene); granulating the mixture; dusting the granules with powdered clay; and heating. Penetration of water into inside pores of the calcined clay particles during the prepn. of the concrete mix. is prevented. the granules are strong with no agglutination and the surface layer is not damaged during the process. The cost is relatively low.
