Abstract

The folded strips of material are incorporated within a length of belt (16) whose overlapped ends are joined together. The strips and belt pass through a fixed plate (19) and over an upper pin (25) carried by a mounting plate (26). This mounting plate carries a buckle plate (6) with a central aperture. The seat belt passes upwardly from a supply roll through this aperture and around the passenger. The aperture has a fixed pin (20) about which the loop of belt passes and a downward force exerted on the seat belt causes the internal folds to move upwardly into engagement with the edge of the hole through plate (19). Increasing loads cause successive rupturing of the folds to absorb the energy.
