Abstract

Saponine (I) and flavones (II) are obtd. by extraction from ivy, esp. the powdered leaf, by removing all alcohol-soluble constituents except (I) and (II) by a first extraction with a ketone, an ether, an aromatic hydrocarbon or a halogenated saturated hydrocarbon, followed by a second extraction using an alcohol which is subsequently evaporated. The extract has cosmetic applications as a skin toner, but is esp. useful as an anti-inflammatory and anti-haemorrhoidal agent by topical application; it has an anti-exudative effect on induced oedema in the rat and excellent cutaneous penetration by a lipolytic and fluidising action; useful in retarding the release of the generative process of cellulitis.
