Lubricant compsns. requiring a reduced amt. of VI improver for the prepn. of multigrade oils comprise (a) a solvent-refined mineral oil, an acid-refined mineral oil, a hydrorefined mineral oil or a synthetic oil obtd. by olefin oligomerisation and (b) a viscosity-modifying amt. (pref. 10-40 wt. %) of a cpd. of formula: R1(COX)m (where R1 is the m-valent residue of a polycarboxylic acid; m = 2 or 3; X is partly (15-99%) a gp. of formula (OR2)nOR3 and partly (85-1%) a gp. of formula OR3; n = 2-50; R2 is 2-5C alkylene; R3 are hydrocarbon residues of aliphatic or alicyclic. monoalcohols or monophenols).
