Abstract
The octane no. of gasolines contg. unbranched paraffins is increased by selectively hydrocracking at least part of the unbranched paraffins on a catalyst comprising >=1catalytically active metals on a porous support with a uniform pore dia. of 0.42-0.58 nm, the catalyst being pre-coated with >=2.5 (esp. 7.5-12.5) wt.% carbon. The coating is pref. carried out by passing a hydrocarbon oil (pref. the feedstock for the hydrocracking process) over the catalyst at high temp. (>450 degrees C) and pressure (10 bar) in the presence of H2. The prefd. catalysts are: Pt, Pd or Ru on zeolite KSO1; Ni, Co or lanthanide on zeolite KSO1; Ni and Ca or lanthanide on zeolite KSO1; or W or Ni on erionite. The presence of carbon suppresses hydrocracking of useful components, e.g. branched paraffins, on the surface of the catalyst.
