Abstract

In this shackle design, only the outer portion of one of the shackle eyes is tapped, the remaining portion being smooth and the smooth bore hole in the other eye having a diameter which clears the pin maximum diameter. A shoulder on the pin, remote from the screwed end prevents the pin being screwed in too far and the length of the screwed end matches the tapped length in the shackle eye. When assembled the load on the shackle pin is thus taken on the maximum diameter of the pin and not on the reduced diameter at the bottom of the thread.
