Abstract

Additives for mineral lubricating oils are prepd. by polymerising diolefin monomers using organoalkli metal catalysts, followed by hydrogenation using Gp8 metal (salts) catalysts, polymsn. and hydrogenation being both effected in the oil as solvent. Both reactions are unaffected by impurities, e.g. sulphides, present in the oil and the oil has better shear ability than when the additive is added separately. The monomer is pref. butadiene. An aromatic vinyl monomer may be present.
