Abstract

Fixed shape plycrystalline synthetic diamond aggregate is produced from a blank consisting of a C contng. non diamond material in the presence of a catalyst powder and having a larger size than the finished prodt. calculated on the basis of the shrinkage coefficient. This is exposed at a press. of >=80 kbar for 0.1-10 secs. to an electric current impulse which heats it >1500 degrees C. The catalyst particles size is less than the smallest blank dimension. The materials used are spectrographically pure C powder and a WC-TiC-Co catalyst. The process yields a mechanically strong part which has good dimensional accuracy.
