Abstract

The horizontal machine consists of a fixed and a moving pedestal at each end of a pair of guide rails. The two pedestals each possess a flange-transporting device, a tube-transporter, a centering and clamping unit which also adjusts the location of the burner mountings, and tungsten inert-gas welding or plasma is used. The flanges and the tube are moved separately and automatically into the welding position, centred, clamped, the burners moved into position, welded, and removed from the machine; it is esp. suitable for pre-weld flanges. This machine caters for tubes 350-14000 mm long and flanges 35-220 mm dia., the flanges being stored in magazines at each end of the machine. Hand welding and tacking prior to welding are eliminated. A tube and two flanges, all 50 mm bore can be loaded, welded and unloaded in 2 minutes using tungsten-inert gas; using plasma, the total time is 70 seconds.
