Abstract

Soft jawed clamp grips lens(3)during edge bevel grinding etc., and has one jaw 16 inclinable permitting clamping of wedge cross sectioned e.g., prismatic lens(3). The jaws (5, 16)are e.g., hollow spherical segments symmetrically end mounted on twin co-axial shafts(4, 12)which are axially mobilised to bring the jaws to bear one upon the other. The articulating joint is enclosed in a rubber sleeve(15)and can be a sprung(9)needle bearing with the needle(11)encastre with either jaw or shaft, a spherical roller bearing, a universal joint or simply a solid elastic chaped extension of the shaft. The jaws are grooved to obviate suction and align normal to major lens faces.
