Abstract

Carboxylic acids of formula:- RCH2CH2CH(R)COOH, where R is satd. alkyl, mainly 4-24, pref. 6-13C straight chain are prepd by dimerising alcohols of formula R.CH2-CH2OH to form RCH2CH2CH(R)CH2OH, which is oxidatively alkaline fused to the salt of the above acid, which is then acidified. KOH and NaOH, pref. in a eutectic mixt. ratio, are pref. used for the fusion. The prods are used as surfactants, anti-foamers, lubricants, emulsifiers etc. They have a low m.pt and turbidity to replace oleic acid, which is unstable to oxidn.
