Abstract

A vehicle safety belt stows away automatically when not in use and when worn, any abrupt change of speed or direction causes the belt to lock firmly. One end of the belt (3) is fixed to an anchor point (4) on the upper door pillar. A weight (8) suspended in a loop (9) of the belt pulls this down to effect retraction. A long strap (11) also runs in the loop. In the lower door pillar is a locking mechanism (15), operated by centrifugal force, to grip in holes (12) in the strap and automatically hold the belt firmly. A decorative sheath covers the complete mechanism.
