Abstract
After uncoiling, metal strip travels via shears and a welding unit so that the end of a coil can be welded to the front end of the coil following behind. The strip then travels through a variable-storage unit, where it is looped over rolls fitted on a trolley which runs on rails. By moving the trolley, the length of the loops can be increased so that at all times there is an adjustable reservoir of strip which can be used to feed the roll-train when the flow of strip is halted, e.g. by the welding operation. From the moving store, the strip travels through five roll-stands in tandem and flying shears to the coiling reels. All the operations can be computer-controlled, e.g. uncoiling stops during welding and the rolling speed is reduced while the flying shears are used. Speeds are synchronised so that the amt. of strip in the store is held between limits designed to ensure continuous operation; if the limits are exceeded, either the uncoiler or the roll-train is automatically stopped.
