Abstract

Slabs are mfd. in pairs by forming a layer of resin bound particles of marble, a layer of resin filled with a less expensive mineral, and a further layer of either material applied to the corresp. dissimilar layer to make a sandwich structure which is subsequently sliced through the central plane to produce twin two-layer slabs. Binder, is pref. thermosetting polyester resin used with 10-20 pts. mineral filler per pt. resin, Marble should be used as 15-20 mm thick flakes with >=95% of >=10 cm max. dimension. Min. thickness of individual slabs can be made less than that which will survive precure handling in a one stage lay-up, e.g. 11-12 mm thick compared with about 18mm thick.
