Abstract
According to parent patent, electrodes comprising a collecting part formed of a chemically inert electrochemically conducting material encased in an electrochemically active part comprising a metal or a cpd. thereof, and a partially cross-linked polymer, are mfd. by (A) prepg. a satd. soln. of the polymer in water and adding a substance supplying an aldehyde in amt. sufficient to partially cross-link the polymer in the presence of 5-20% of >=1 catalyst; (B) adding 20-50 pt./pt. polymer, of a metal salt, one part of which is water-sol. and the other is compatible with the polymer, at 50-100 degrees C; (C) pouring the soln. into a mould contg. the collecting portion of the electrode until the latter is completely immersed; (D) cooling the mould to =-20 degrees C (E) stripping the cake from the mould and immersing it in an alkaline soln. satd. with an oxide of the metal; (F) washing the cake with cold water; (G) drying the cake at 20-60 degrees C; (H) compressing the cake at 2-10 bars/cm2 press. In the present improvement, the electrode formed by compression of the cake in (H) is coated with the polymer soln. prepd. in (A), on those parts of the side faces not opposite the collecting part of the electrode and on at least the lateral and lower sections of the electrode. The coating is then dried.
