Abstract
The machine detects each character of a written text using photo-electric cells, and the signals obtained are used to control a recording disc carrying parallel tracks each representing one letter of the alphabet. The characters are enlarged before detection. This is performed by focussing them onto a grid defined by the cells. Each cell produces a note of a characteristic pitch when it falls on part of a letter, so that each letter or normal typescript produces a characteristic chord. The text is recorded using the reading head and the record may be played back when required.
