Abstract

A long horizontal mixer, esp. as used in sealed pressurised cylindrical chemical reactors, has bearings at each end, which are of a self-aligning swivel type, so that their housings may be machined independently, pref. by mounting the domed ends of the vessel in a lathe, before welding to body. No specialised large-scale equipment is necessary, since body of mixer need not be accommodated on lathe bed. Bearings incorporate a stuffing-box, and spherical swivel surfaces are sealed, e.g. with 'O' ring inserts.
