Abstract
Pure H2 is obtd. from ind/electrolyte H2 or from gas mixts. by diffusion through a Pd foil maintained at 200-900 degrees C. The press. of the gas after permeating the foil is kept at partial press. H2 in the original mixt. Prior to contacting the gas with the foil, a quantity of water vapour is introduced into it to a partial press. of >=5 (pref. 80-160)mm Hg. This minimises poisoning of the foil esp. by H2S so that high permeabilities are maintained over long periods without using expensive alloying elements in the foil compsn.
