Abstract

Support consists of a sheet of plastic material, such as polyethylene, which contains titanium dioxide to give it a white, milky appearance; it has a thickness of 0.02-0.04mm and has the general shape of an 'H'. The two main parts are joined by a narrow central portion which goes between the baby's legs. The side panels cover the abdomen and the lower part of the back. Wings are provided which are fixed, two by two, at the baby's sides. An absorbent mass, such as cellulose wadding, is kept in place by a piece of non-woven voile; this overlaps the wadding at every point. The voile is welded to the support, using intervening strips of polyethylene to give mechanical strength and prevent tearing when fixing the wings. Sufficient strength is obtd. by the strips without any need to increase the thickness of the expensive plastic support. The method of mfr. and the machine employed are described.
