Abstract

A bridge, carrying submerged rakes, rotated slowly above a circular basin, esp. a sludge settling tank of waste water; has an axial drive, comprising two or more pinions, engaging a crown gear attached to the bridge; the pinions being actuated by hydraulic motors, driven from a pump mounted on the bridge. The crown gear is supported by oblique rollers, bearing on a plinth at centre of tank. Drive forces are equilibrated between the motors, thus avoiding overload on individual pinions. The pump has a by-pass circuit, and the system is adaptable to automation by manometric control. Rail slippage, as encountered with known peripheral drive systems, is obviated, and cost is 30-40% less, with reduced maintenance.
