Abstract

Carbon or glass fibre mat can be resin bonded by incorporation of resin into a mat of chopped fibres and hot rolling. The fibres are unwound simultaneously from several reels and drawn together through cutters of know design which cut the fibres into desired lengths. Thermoplastic resin is fed into the falling stream of fibres as powder from above or below the cutter or as a continuous sheet on the moving belt which receives the fibres. The assembly is then fed between heated rolls to join the fibres into a continuous coil. Appts. is simple cheap and versatile. It does not give off unsocial fumes of solvent or use large quantities of energy.
