Abstract

Aldehydes are produced by hydroformylation is presence of a complex with a diphosphine pref. of formula: (R)2P.R1.P(R)2 (II) (R1=divalent hydrocarbyl having >=1 asymmetric C and opt. >=1 heteroatoms; R = same or different opt. substd. hydrocarbyl). Complex may be used e.g., as a mixt. of Co carbonyl or of RhCl2(CO)4 with (II). The metal/diphosphine ratio is 1:1 to 1:20. the catalyst may be supported by a mineral or org. support. Process is rapid, operates at low press. and, when optically active olefins are used, gives improved optical selectivity.
