Abstract

Problems associated with the potentiometric determn. of acid strength in pickling baths contg. HF are overcome by using ion selective electrodes. A lanthanum fluoride electrode is used for F and a reference electrode has 4M KCl surrounding it. An H ion selective electrode is formed by placing an Ag electrode in a plastic sheath and putting a barrier of strongly acidic ion exchange resin between the sample soln. and the electrode. The space inside the sleeve is filled with 1M HNO3 and 0.1M HCl. This gives a controlled environment for H ion potential measurement. The HF and other acid concs. are then determined from the potentials obtd.
