Abstract
Radioactive fuel rods are protected from corrosion in storage ponds by a protective org. coating which is insol. or slightly sol. in water. Two types of coating are described. In the first a coating is formed by dipping the fuel rod in a bath of dodecane and in the second tributylphosphate is added to the pond water at a concn. below the solubility limit. The tributylphosphate in soln. then reacts with the fuel rod surface to form a protective layer. The redn. in corrosion obtd. by using the org. coatings markedly improves the ease of handling of the fuel elements prior to chemical processing.
