Abstract

Packaging comprising a series of pockets between two layers of continuous thermoplastic sheeting, welded face to face by equipment incorporating grips for moving the sheets stepwise through a corridor of spit moulds which successively preheat, shape weld and chill the sheets. Shaping is assisted by inflation, using nozzles which reciprocate normal to the corridor axis to pressurise one or more open mouth pockets at once. Several sets of inflation nozzles may be used, moving on an ancillary belt or conveyor system synchronised with the movements of the thermoplastic sheets, to sustain the shape of the pockets and their mouths until the material is sufficiently chilled to be selfsupporting. Packets or groups thereof may subsequently be filled, sealed and isolated by ancillary equipment. The nozzle mountings make a sliding joint with an injection pressure distribution manifold. Process is less complicated and operates higher throughputs than prior art processes for mfg. similar packs for holding suppositories or similar goods.
