Abstract

Swelling compsn. contains a primary swelling agent based on N-dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine of particle size below 200 micron, a secondary swelling agent of particle size 0.3 to 2 mm and optionally wood flour. The preferred quantities are 0.5 to 15 pts., particularly 2-6 pts. of the primary agent, 0.1 to 8 pts. particularly 0.5 to 2 pts. of secondary agent and 0-100 pts. particularly 10-20 pts. of wood flour. The preferred secondary swelling agent is urea. A process for preparing vulcanisates with the appearance of cork comprises adding the above compsn. to natural or synthetic rubber, preferably using 2-6 pts. of primary swelling agent and 0.5 to 2 pts. of secondary swelling agent per 100 pts. rubber. Previous process using N-dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine only gives imitation cork with very fine uniformly distributed holes whereas the above also gives this together with a random distribution of much larger holes.
