Abstract
A gas contg. SO2 and O2 is purified and S is recovered by (a) contacting the gas with a soln. of (thio) urea, an alkali (Na, K) or ammonium salt of an org. carboxylic acid or a (cyclo) alkyl- or aylphosphoric acid in an inert solvent, so that SO2 is absorbed; and (b) contacting the soln. from the first stage with a gas contg. H2S, so that S is recovered and the absorption soln. is regenerated. S is recovered from gases contg. 0.5-10 vol % O2, the SO2 concn. being reduced to <50 ppm by volume. The acid used for salt formation pre.has >=1 acid function with pKa 2 5-6 and the base/acid molar ratio is 0.1-2 (0.2-0.9)
