Abstract

An implantable bone-growth stimulator comprises a current source connected to an external cathodic electrode and an external anodic electrode; the exposed surface of the anodic electrode is of an electrically conducting material possessing a higher oxidising potential than living tissue esp. platinum or rhodium. The use of such a material or coating for the anode prevents the risk of decay of the tissue or bone necrosis. The current source is encapsulated in a vessel of inert material, esp. epoxy resin, or alternatively of metal. If of metal, it may constitute the anode. The conductors comprise a titanium wire core inside a silicone elastomer sheath.
