Abstract

Two channels running side by sie are sepd. by a porous membrane with differential wetting characteristics in respect of aq. solns. and organic liquids. An emulsion of the mixt. is fed along the tap channel at a given pressure, and an org. solvent at a different pressure, fed along the lower channel. The pressure differential is adjusted so that the organic liquid is leached out of the emulsion through the membrane, but the aq. soln. is not forced through the pores. The membrane is of porous sintered plastic or sintered glass. Extraction is a continuous operation with high discrimination.
