Abstract

Pallet bases of hollow weld free unitary construction and internally reinforced by an expanded resin or by trapped air. Pref. the edges of the pallet base are stepped to accept the edges of extension walls which can be mounted on the base to contain items placed thereon. Metal straps comprising perforated metal strip may be incorporated within or as inserts in the base structure to provide local stiffening. Hollow structure offers sufficient strength without involving external ribs which may inhibit cleaning for transporting e.g. foodstuffs. Dense skin material is less fragile than simple foamed platens. Pallet base may be blow moulded from e.g. polyethylene, may be filled with e.g. polyurethane foam or inflated pneumatically to an internal pressure of ca 3 bars.
