A chelating agent (I) of formula: where (a) R1 is 1-20C alkyl, -CH2CH2OH or H, and R2 is H or an alkali metal ion (I) is prepd. by reacting an amine (II) of formula: HNR.CH2.COOH (II) or its alk. metal salt with epichlorohydrin under controlled conditions of temp. and pH.
